Finding Darwin’s God
Well-known biology professor and textbook author, Kenneth R. Miller, believes that a proper understanding of evolution is neither anti-religious nor anti-spiritual. And when asked what kind of a God he believes in, Dr. Miller claims he believes in Darwin’s God. What does he mean? Are there any inherent incongruities to such statements and belief?
John West, Senior Fellow at Discovery Institute and Associate Director of Discovery Institute’s Center for Science and Culture, in his book Darwin Day in America, 2008, states, “As a Roman Catholic, Miller wants to preserve his belief in God. At the same time, he wants to defend a robust view of evolution as purposeless and unguided.” (225) Dr. West goes on to say, “Miller’s view is a radical departure from traditional Christian (or Jewish or Muslim) teaching that human beings are created as the result of God’s specific plan.” (226)
Dr. Benjamin Wiker, speaking of Charles Darwin, contributes to the discussion with “for at least the second half of his life, he was – for all practical purposes – an atheist.” See What Were Darwin’s Religious Views?
